Americans are sounding a loud alarm on the state of the economy just two weeks before the congressional elections, creating a precarious environment for Republican candidates. According to the latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey, President Donald Trump’s economic approval rating has plummeted to an all-time low, with his net economic approval sitting at negative 31 percent. While dissatisfaction is strongest among Democrats and independents, the real story lies within the Republican base, where pessimism has surged to levels not seen in either of Trump’s terms.
This shift suggests a breakdown in the traditional support system that usually shields Republicans during midterms. Micah Roberts of Public Opinion Strategies noted that while Republicans typically maintain a slim margin of optimism regarding the economy, that wall has finally cracked. Now, roughly 35 percent of Republicans view the current economic climate negatively, contributing to an overall sentiment where eight out of ten Americans rate the economy as either fair or poor. This widespread discontent is mirrored in the polls, which show a growing preference for Democratic control of Congress by a seven point margin.
Voters are increasingly focused on kitchen table issues and systemic integrity over partisan loyalty. High costs for food and gasoline have become primary drivers of anxiety, particularly among non MAGA Republicans and lower income households. Beyond inflation, government corruption has emerged as a top priority for thirty six percent of respondents, with overwhelming bipartisan agreement that elected officials and their families should be barred from profiting through federal contracts or stock trading tied to government business.
Other indicators suggest further headwinds for the GOP, including higher enthusiasm levels among Democratic voters and women. Even in key swing states where Trump previously performed well, voters currently lean toward Democratic control. With stability slipping and opposition interest peaking around themes of democratic protection and affordability, analysts warn that Republican campaigns may find themselves fighting a losing battle against an tide of general public disillusionment.
