An unconfirmed report of mediation between Iran and Pakistan took about $3 off Brent crude inside a single session on Tuesday, pulling the benchmark from a five-month high of $111.99 to a $108.79 settlement. By Wednesday afternoon it had been as high as $111.32 and was back at $108.19, down 0.55%.
The round trip happened without a single barrel changing hands differently, which is the point of this story. A diplomat involved in the negotiations then told Bloomberg that while talks aimed at ending the conflict are continuing, “reports that an agreement is close are inaccurate,” and the oil price recovered most of the drop overnight.
Brent Ran to $111.99, Settled at $108.79 and Sits Near $108 Today
The December Brent contract opened Wednesday at $109.27 and has traded a $108.10 to $111.32 range on 146,000 lots. That leaves crude oil prices up 1.99% on the week, 9.97% on the month and 44.34% for the year to date.
WTI is the number that looks worse than it is, and the reason is mechanical rather than fundamental. The November contract expired on Tuesday at $101.79, down $1.87, and quotes now track December near $97. The roughly $3 step down is a contract roll rather than a collapse, which matters because the headline comparison has been circulating without that caveat. Every large move on this chart is a headline about Iran rather than a change in physical supply. Source: Oilprice.comPakistan’s Army Chief Met Iran’s President, and That Was the Catalyst
What actually happened in Tehran is a good deal smaller than the price move would suggest. Iran’s president met Pakistan’s army chief in Tehran to discuss mediation, and traders took that as reason enough to lift part of the war premium. No text was published, no party confirmed terms, and no ceasefire was declared.
Mediation attempts have stalled before in this conflict, including when Oman postponed the GCC-Iran meeting on the Strait of Hormuz in September. Iran’s position has not visibly shifted either, having last week demanded a US withdrawal while keeping a Hormuz proposal open. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said Iran offered to help broker talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, and neither has responded.
Investor Takeaway
A $3 move on an unconfirmed meeting shows how thin the market is, so position sizing matters more than the direction of the Iran headline.
Polymarket Prices a Hormuz Agreement at 8% This Month
Prediction markets are blunter about Iran than the oil tape has been this week. Polymarket’s contract on a US-Iran Hormuz agreement by 31 October trades at 8.2%, with 30 November at 25.5% and 31 December at 32.5%. A separate market asking whether there will be no Hormuz agreement before 23 October sits at 94.3% on about $1 million of volume.
Traders are therefore pricing roughly a one-in-three chance of an agreement by the end of the year. That is not nothing, and it is a long way from the “agreement is close” framing that moved Brent on Tuesday.
Eighteen Vessels in Two Weeks, and the Curve Still Says This Ends
None of the physical risk around Iran changed over the two days the headlines did. Kpler counted at least 18 vessel attacks in two weeks, LSEG analysts said Iran has targeted ships as far south as the Gulf of Oman, and crude flows through the region fell to about 8.5 million barrels a day from more than 20 million the week before. Houthi claims of strikes on the Yanbu Aramco site and the Shaybah oilfield remain unverified, as several Iran tanker claims have been.
The futures curve is where the market states its real view on how long this lasts. December 2026 Brent at $108.19 sits $21.50 above the December 2027 contract at $86.69, and the curve keeps falling to $71.03 by December 2030. Traders are paying a steep premium for barrels now while refusing to pay it two years out, which says they expect the Iran disruption to resolve on a horizon measured in quarters rather than years.
Investor Takeaway
Steep backwardation means the premium sits in the front of the curve, so a verified ceasefire would hit December 2026 hardest and barely touch 2029.
